Brazilian Jiu JitsuVoorhees Township, New Jersey
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial art the utilizes grappling techniques which allow smaller opponents to defeat larger, more powerful adversaries. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was introduced to the mainstream United States in 1993 after Royce Gracie defeated several opponents in one night to win the inaugural Ultimate Fighting Championship.
The art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is often compared to a physical chess match. Students of this martial art learn complex ground fighting sequences intended to offset the balance of opponents, reverse position and apply chokes and joint locks to eventually finish the altercation.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a varied art form with many different philosophies and approaches. Before you begin your study of this art it is important to identify whether you intend on learning this art for competition, self defense or simply as a fun and healthy hobby. A student using Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for self defense will have a much different understanding of the art than a sport practitioner. It is important to make sure that your academy aligns with your individual goals and interests.
The Hands Up Studios Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program approaches Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as a highly effective means of subduing opponents without putting oneself in danger. This program focuses on high percentage, proven techniques that have been demonstrated to work in multiple scenarios. Our opinion is that the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is most valuable when a student is able to use his or her techniques not only in a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competition but also in a self defense scenario or in a sanctioned Mixed Martial Arts bout.
Our instructors are highly knowledgeable in the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and we are excited to offer a unique teaching philosophy and perspective to students in Voorhees, NJ and any interest students in the surrounding South Jersey areas. Our curriculum has spent over 11 years in development and the techniques have been proven effective in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competition and Mixed Martial Arts at the amateur and professional level.
All Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes require a kimono and belt. Students will use the kimono (commonly referred to as a gi) as a tool against their opponent. The gi is used to throw, choke and immobilize opponents. Hands Up Studios follows the traditional Brazilian Jiu Jitsu standards for promotion. Students who aspire to earn a black belt in the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu can expect to invest a minimum of 6 years of study in order to demonstrate mastery of technique and philosophy. Students begin at white belt before advancing to blue, purple, brown and black in that order. Select dedicated practitioners may be promoted to more advanced belts after decades of consistent study.
